Method

Five steps. Then back to people, one turn higher.

The work follows five steps. It starts with people and comes back to them.

A hand redraws a plan on tracing paper over earlier versions.
Human Vision Indicators Data Decisions
  1. Human — Who does it serve, deeply? What is the core human benefit?
  2. Vision — Where are we going, in one sentence everyone can repeat?
  3. Indicators — How will we know it works?
  4. Data — What do we collect, and who looks at it?
  5. Decisions — Who decides, by when, and on what basis? Challenge the machine.
  1. 01 Human

Who does it serve, deeply? What is the core human benefit?

We start with the people it serves, inside and outside the company. We name the core human benefit in plain words. No tool and no metric until that benefit is clear.

  2. 02 Vision

Where are we going, in one sentence everyone can repeat?

We write where we’re going in one sentence. Everyone in the room can repeat it without notes. If they can’t, we rewrite it.

  3. 03 Indicators

How will we know it works?

We choose how we’ll know it works. Each indicator ties back to the vision and has an owner.

  4. 04 Data

What do we collect, and who looks at it?

We decide what we collect, and who looks at it. Clean working data beats a pile of reports nobody reads.

  5. 05 Decisions

Who decides, by when, and on what basis? Challenge the machine.

We name who decides, by when, and on what basis. The machine can propose. We challenge it, and a human decides.

Feed forward: each turn starts higher

After Decisions, we go back to Human.

Not to start over: to start one notch higher.

Each turn uses what the last one taught us.

It’s a rising spiral, not a closed circle.

In practice: the 10-minute ritual after each sail

  1. What worked say it precisely, so we do it again.
  2. What cost us time facts, never people.
  3. One thing we change next time just one, applied on the next sail.
